“If anything is sacred, the human body is sacred” -Walt Whitman I Sing the Body Electric

In many ways the next chapter in the clothes free history of Africans and their descendants in Europe and the Americas could be described as a journey from the sacred to the profane. The cultural and religious values of European colonists judged the natural, logical states of dress of the indigenous Africans to be profane, barbaric, savage and uncivilized. The colonial era and the accompanying slave trade which brought Africans into contact with Europeans who had a limited view of the world, amplified this perspective. The European populous was exposed to body shapes and skin color they had never seen before.

Her “unusual” physical characteristics though not unnatural for Khoisan (Khoikhoi) women were considered freakish by Europeans in London and then Paris. Many African-American women will recognize the body shape that was…

“Until lions have their own historians, tales of the hunt shall always glorify the hunter” – African Proverb

This is the first in a four-part series of posts about the presence of African-Americans and people of African descent in the clothes free community for Black History Month. This series will look at a brief history of naturism, nudism, and clothes free living in connection with  African-Americans and their participation in the clothes free community. Hopefully, this series will accomplish two things; deepen the awareness of the African American community about the historical practice naturism among people of African ancestry. Also to encourage dialogue between the African-American community and the clothes free community about the lingering limiting factors that impact their participation.

The history

In order to understand the current state of African-Americans and naturism, nudism and clothes free living, we have to look back at the history of naturism, nudity and…

Naturism and Nudism have a PR problem

A really important discussion.

Formerly clothes free life visit our new home

Naturism and nudism have a PR problem and if it isn’t resolved the consequences could be disastrous. The problem originates from the advent of new technology social media and cultural shifts.

Often while browsing the web looking for news stories I come across ordinary people who share their clothes free experience who start by saying I am no nudist. The word nudist has become so associated with sexual nudity that ordinary people who genuinely want to explore naturist and clothes free living avoid it. Porn mongers, pervs and sex trolls have coopted the term nudist to describe their sexual activities and promote their sexual proclivities. Google the word nudist or search on Twitter and the majority of items returned will be porn related.

I can also tell you that the cultures between swinger nudism and family-oriented nudism really aren’t all that different.

Really important

Formerly clothes free life visit our new home

Used to be social media was about sharing one’s experiences and memories with others through tweets pics and videos that captured those experiences and brought them into the digital sphere. Well get ready for the rising tide of collector accounts in social media. These account don’t share anything about the account holder. Rather they collect and repost stuff (primarily images) from other people.  This growing trend is particularly focused on images and videos of naked and partially undressed people.

With names like Get Your Ass in Nature, Bottomless Tour, Nudist Lover, Cheeky Guys, Naked Yoga Nebulae. These accounts social media platforms like Tumblr, Instagram and others invite you to send them your nude pictures so they can promote body freedom and you don’t have to worry about your account being compromised by the censors. The owners of those accounts rarely if ever post images of themselves they only put the…

Naked Yoga: My Cinderblock and Anchor in Truth

Formerly clothes free life visit our new home

Photo 27-09-2015 09 23 38My naked yoga practice never gets old. In fact, the more I do it, the deeper it connects to all aspects of my life journey: physical, mental and spiritual. It has, over the past year, become my soul food, in fact, the foundation upon which I stand in the midst of storming changes.

One of my favorite pieces of literature is a book by TKV Desikachar called “The Heart of Yoga: Developing a Personal Practice.” At first, I thought that this was the 900th book on poses and sequences for a physical home practice. To my joyful surprise, the personal practice described here is a much deeper work about the practice of the heart.

Empowered at 59 going clothes free at nude beach

Great great share!

“All my scars and stretch marks that told my life story took on a badge of honor, instead of the shame game I had been playing with myself all those years.”

The badge of honor is how I feel about mine, too!

How Going To A Nude Beach At 59 Empowered Me

I stripped off everything and walked off toward the shoreline with my photographer. As he snapped off photos of me near the surf, I felt my insecurities about body image and exposing my private parts start to fade away. All the years of my misconceptions about what other people thought of my naked body disappeared. All my scars and stretch marks that told my life story took on a badge of honor, instead of the shame game I had been playing with myself all those years.

After the photos, we put away the camera, flapped out our towels on the sand, and sprayed on sunscreen like there was no tomorrow. At this point, I started looking around, taking in the people and the atmosphere of the nude beach. What I felt and saw in those minutes, relaxing on the sun-warmed…
